Very interesting and informative programme today (15th August 2023) understanding listeners experience of installing solar panels and heat pumps.
As homeowners across the UK are making more green improvements to their homes that ever before Radio 4 ask their listeners for their stories.
Currently on average more than 20,000 households have installed solar panels each month this year and the number of homes installing heat pumps has reached 3000 a month for the first time.
It is also noted that there is currently no VAT on renewable kit, and with schemes still available and prices reducing with demand. It seems to be a good time to consider retrofitting.
While this is still falling short of the governments targets to move away from fossil fuel, these are encouraging figures.
However, it is not a one size fits all situation and you must ensure the changes you make are right for your property.
Real Life Stories
Radio 4’s Winifred Robinson asked a number of callers to share their experiences.
The first three were all positive. Driven by the want to go green and help reduce their carbon footprint, these examples were good.
A common theme was that each one was quite expensive to install. However grants have helped to make that slightly more affordable.
The return from solar panels is more visible, and each listener was very pleased with this. Note each one had a south facing property – something to ensure is noted in your research.
They all had ASHP installed, and did see an increase in their electricity spend as you would expect with the current electricity prices.
The second group of callers highlighted that there is can be planning issues to overcome if you have space constraints. Space within London is extremely challenging.
However, if you do your research first, you will know if there is a way to overcome your issues.
Equally, you might want to engage with an independent advisor to check your plans. One caller had issues with the size of the unit, and therefore it was working overtime to meet the family demands and costing 8 times as much as their previous bills.
