Leicester Case Study
Our clients were looking for an independent heating consultant to review their heating systems. They had recently purchased a property which had a combination of inefficient heating arrangements. These including a vented warm air system dating back to the early 1960’s. Electric under floor heating in 5 areas using different control systems, and economy 7 immersion heating for hot water. They needed a heating expert to come and review the existing systems and recommend suitable upgrades and improvements. Having a lot of renovation work planned for the property over the coming months it was a sensible time for a heating upgrade to be incorporated.
Heating Consultant Rob Bohm
Rob heads up our heating and energy consultancy team. He is an experienced plumbing and heating engineer with expertise in renewable technologies.
Rob joined CLPM in 2014 as a building project manager. Over the years he has worked on all kinds of projects from residential building projects to commercial premises. However, recently we have seen the number of clients who need heating and energy advice grow significantly. Rob now spends much of his time carrying out heating or energy surveys, writing client reports and delivering sustainability advice. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and helping clients plan to use less carbon, and have energy efficient homes.
Leicester Site Survey
Step 1 : Understanding your needs
Rob met with the clients at their property. He always takes the time to understand their priorities, budget and what they wanted achieve.
The clients have plans for the property to be renovated including the removal of an old conservatory. They were also keen to change the layout of the property and create a separate annex, and a second floor extension.
It is quite common for heating systems to be extended and added to as part of extensions Often pipework is added here and there. Nothing seemed to fit together very well, with a mix match of kit, it wasn’t a surprise to see the system was not working very well.
The clients wanted to incorporate a new heat system from a new heat source which would service the property as a whole, and enable them to have a cosy energy efficient home on a lesser carbon footprint.

Step 2: Assess the current systems and evaluate ways to make improvements
In this case, Rob surveyed the fabric of the building.
He found that there were areas where the insulation was not performing very well, and he recommended this be addressed. For any new systems to work effectively, the property needs to be well insulated, with no draughty areas.
Rob suggested improvements to the roof and walls. He specified the level of insulation needed in specific areas to allow the systems to be effective.
The clients planned that certain areas of glazing would be replaced in the renovation works, this allowed Rob to specify what U Values would be required.
He also looked at the plans for the main home and the annex and was able to carry out heat loss calculations to suggest how much heat would be needed in kW.
The clients were keen to have separate heating systems for each area, so Rob was able to determine which was suitable for each.
Much of this can be incorporated into their improvement plans.

Step 2 : The Report
Once the review is complete, and all the research has been done the consultant will issue a report. This will bring together all the points into one document for you. We hope our clients use this as a basis of a brief for the future works they decide to carry out by a heating engineer, or build team.
In this case, Rob looked at various options for each area of the home. His report outlines the possibilities and the pro’s and con’s, including green energy suggestions along with the traditional methods. This gives the clients all the information they need to make an informed decision to create an energy efficient home.
Our clients are taking Robs advice on board and building it into their renovation works.

Next Steps
Why not take advantage of our heating and energy consultancy additional services?
Our Consultants offer a range of services to follow on from your survey and report.
Schedule of Works
A first step could be a Schedule of Works. This can be for any heating, plumbing or energy improvement works. It is a bit like a shopping list.
Budget and Tendering
CLPM can produce a budget for your heating or energy works. Once the plan is complete, and the budget agreed, we can offer a list of potential companies to carry this out. We have worked with a number of incredible people over the years, and we are happy to share that knowledge.
Overseeing the Work
We can also oversee the work. We find that often the success of a project depends on the quality of the installation. Sometimes clients ask us ‘how will I know if the system is put in correctly?’. This is where we can help.
