My name is Alison Maddison, and I am an experienced Chartered Quantity Surveyor.
Having graduated with a Maths degree, I joined a management training programme at a major contractor, and through them I gained my RICS chartership. Over my career, I have worked for both contractors and consultants, based onsite or in the office and I now head up the cost management team for CLPM Limited in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.
Quantity Surveying at CLPM – a varied, flexible career choice
Since starting a family, one of the key priorities for me is to maintain a good work life balance and I have achieved this by returning to work on a part time basis after I took an 8 year career break to focus on my young children.
For me, no two days are the same – partly because I work part time, and partly because my job is split between delivering projects and managing the CLPM cost team. I work a three-day week, comprising two full days and two half days, and typically I spend two of those days organising the team and our workload and one getting stuck into the nitty gritty detail of our profession.
My day always starts with a decent breakfast, followed by a short commute to work if I am heading in to the office – or a short walk upstairs to my study, if I am working from home! My children are teenagers now, so other than a sharp prod to wake them up, they pretty much get themselves to school in the mornings. My only other duty is to feed my miniature schnauzer, Otto and take him for a quick walk round the block if I need to head into work.
Quantity Surveying at CLPM – How I spend my day
My working day starts with a review of any emails that have come in since my previous working day and a list of must-do actions for the day ahead. I also have a running list of longer term “to-do’s”, which is constantly being added to, and the aim is to deal with a couple of these each day, so that the list remains manageable!
During the course of the day I will deal with a combination of project cost and contract tasks, together with more departmental and management actions required to keep everything moving in the right direction. In the morning I could be completing a valuation, after lunch setting up a contract and ending the day with a revenue forecast for the department.
Each of my team members is responsible for the deliverables on their projects, but I need to keep an overview on all projects to make sure that we are meeting our client expectations. So I check in with each of them on a regular basis each week, and we also have a fortnightly meeting with the whole team to discuss any areas of concern, or highlight additional support required. This also gives us all a chance to catch up and have good chat.
Quantity Surveying – My advice for our clients
My advice for clients who want to get the best cost certainty and cost control is to spend more time up front fully defining the scope of works and design, so that changes are limited during the course of the project. There will always be an element of unforeseen changes, due to the nature of construction, so always set aside a contingency to deal with these; this will reduce the impact of any nasty surprises!
Quantity Surveying – Job Satisfaction
The things I enjoy most about being a Quantity Surveyor at CLPM is helping to create wonderful homes for our clients, and dealing with a huge variety of clients, contractors and colleagues!
After work and at the weekend, I love to watch my children’s various sporting activities and even enjoy the odd work out myself. I like to eat out as a treat after a week of hard work and have been known to partake in the occasional glass of wine or G&T with friends and extended family.
