Case Study
Our Heating and Energy Consultant James recently carried out a site survey to clients in North West London.
The clients wanted a health check on their current systems as they found they were spending more than they wanted to on their energy. As their home was built in the 1920’s they had experienced issues with ventilation.
They were also keen to install a new system and update their aging system to include renewable energy solutions.
James Johnston
After training as a Heating and Ventilating engineer in the commercial sector of construction, James moved into the domestic heating, plumbing and drainage field. Here he built up a wealth of experience within the industry before specialising in domestic heating maintenance.
A great asset to CLPM, James now spends all of his work time carrying out heating or energy surveys, writing client reports and delivering sustainability advice.
Site Survey
Step 1 : Understanding your needs
We’ll start by meeting with you either at your property or virtually using whichever technology you are comfortable with. During this time our home heating expert will discuss the issues you are experiencing in greater detail. They will aim to understand your priorities, your budget and what you wish to achieve.
Step 2: Assess the current systems
The consultant will ask to be shown around your property. They may need to see the particular elements of your current system, and gain an understanding of how you use them, and how they work.
They will then discuss the findings.
Step 2 : The Report
Once the review is complete, we will issue a written report. This will bring together all the points into one document for you. This report can then be used as a basis of a brief for the future works you decide to carry out on your home by your heating engineer, or build team.

Schedule of Works
A first step could be a Schedule of Works. This can be for any heating, plumbing or energy improvement works. It is a bit like a shopping list. It can be used to send to trades people to get the ball rolling.
Budget and Tendering
CLPM can produce a budget for your heating or energy works. Once the plan is complete, and the budget agreed, we can offer a list of potential companies to carry this out. We have worked with a number of incredible people over the years, and we are happy to share that knowledge.
Overseeing the Work
We can also oversee the work. We find that often the success of a project depends on the quality of the installation. A question we are always asked is ‘how will I know if the system is put in correctly?’ – this is where we can help.
Solutions for our clients
James had found that certain elements of their heating system was not working at capacity for the family living at the property. He suggested a few ‘tweaks’ to the system to maximise its use. It is fairly old, and James had some thoughts to share on what a replacement might look like.
Through the review James also checked the insulation levels were sufficient. He got a good understanding of the fabric of the building. This can also have an impact on how warm certain rooms can be, so he had some thoughts on some changes.
Through the survey, James was able to suggest several ways our client could upgrade his home. The client is delighted, as he now has a list of issues to tackle, and he is confident these changes will improve the ambience of his home and reduce his bills.
