Our recent clients were extremely diligent about undertaking their research. They attended the Project Management course at the NSBRC, which is run by CLPM’s director Charlie Laing. Not being experts in building homes, our client knew he didn’t have the knowledge and expertise to manage a self build project by himself, but he was keen to try.
Getting along with Charlie on the course, and understanding the value CLPM’s expertise could bring, gave him confidence to appoint an independent project management company.
After a difficult start, our client met a timber frame specialist, also at the Self Build Centre, Their designers listened to their wishes and created their designs. The clients were impressed with their service and appointed them to provide the timber frame and they worked with them throughout the project.

Their plans started to take shape, and the build began.
Hiring a Project Manager
The main challenge was the fact that our clients work full time, and have busy lives.
This provided the eye opener that project managing a self build is all consuming. The clients soon realised that the key to success was going to be in the organisation.
Decisions needed to be made daily. This is when our Gloucester based Project Manager Mario came on board and took the lead and stress.
In the role of Contract Administrator Mario was integral to making sure all parties carry out the work to the terms written in the contract.
CLPM’s energy consultant Rob Bohm was appointed to provide advice at the planning stage. The clients wish for a renewable energy source was designed in conjunction with their chosen installation company. Rob ensured the plans were the most suitable ones for the property, and then oversaw the installation to make sure all the kit worked to the spec.
CLPM’s Quantity Surveying team helped the clients monitor their budget via monthly cost reporting. This provided the reassurance our client was looking for to ensure the build cost they had planned per square meter was kept to.
