Surrey Construction Project Manager – A Day in the Life
Looking for a Surrey Construction Project Manager? My name is Lance and I work for CLPM, and am a member of the construction project management team. I am the Surrey Construction Project Manager supporting both residential and commercial clients in South London, Outer London and Sussex. I am based in Croydon, and regularly work on building projects in Coulsdon, Epsom, Leatherhead, Lambeth, Sutton, Reigate, Dorking and Bromley.
CLPM
CLPM is a medium-sized construction project management company, based in Rickmansworth. But we can help clients with their building projects right across London and the South East. We provide a comprehensive variety of services to support our clients. I am one of six Construction Project Managers, and I also work closely with our team of Quantity Surveyors, our Energy Efficiency expert and our Heating Advice expert.
I’ve been at CLPM now for almost a year now. Previously I worked for several years as a Contract’s Manager. Here I would oversee the teams organising the repair and maintenance of housing stock. I’ve also held a number of positions where my responsibilities have included other elements such as site surveying, design, cost estimation and client liaison.
Project Manager
My role as CLPM’s Surrey Construction Project Manager means I spend most of my time out and about. I’ve got quite a variety of building project clients at the moment and am involved with a few new build and refurbishment projects. These include 2 timber frame new build houses, including a Potton home. As well as a couple of renovations and home extensions.
I live in the Croydon area and most days I’m up at around 6am. Normally I start the day with a morning workout – I’m into Martial Arts so like to keep fit and it’s a good way to get me fired up for the day ahead. I rarely eat breakfast – instead I graze all day long while I’m out – which I know is bad!
The first thing I do in the morning is check my phone for calls, messages and emails. Then I revise my plan for the day if required, before heading out to meet with clients or to go onsite and see the builders. I drive a Vauxhall Frontera 3.2 V6 which is a very practical car for carrying about lots of kit, and visiting muddy construction sites! I typically visit 2 or 3 sites a day and cover around 20 to 50 miles.
Queries
I spend my day dealing with all sorts of queries – from going through specific details of the build to making sure the builders are happy onsite. Tackling everything that is needed from visiting site visits at short notice, to finding suppliers and contractors. I’ll spend my afternoons and evenings catching up on the paperwork – planning and organising what needs to be done next. I love my job, and I can really say that you never get bored and learn something new every day.
Tips
My top tip for clients thinking of appointing a construction project manager for their building project is to be open and friendly. Trust him or her, and make sure you keep communications channels open.
I am a hands on person and from a trade background, so in the past I have personally completed several refurbishment projects, including full house upgrades. Nowadays however when I’m not working I am more likely to be found in the studio either teaching Wing Chun Kung Fu or training in Wing Chun. I also enjoy spending time with my son.
