How a talented architect and his partner transformed their new home

THE PROJECT
This project involved renovating and adding a new single storey extension to the rear of the two-up, two-down cottage and some external landscaping works.
Our client, who is an architect and filmaker, designed the new space himself. His aim was to create a modern home while retaining all the characterful period features. Energy efficiency and sustainability were also priorities, with our client wishing to retain and renovate where possible, as well as improve the EPC from an F to a C.
THE CHALLENGE
As our client and his partner are both busy professionals they needed help organising the building works. He was keen to oversee the builder and check the accuracy of the construction but asked for our help in the pre-construction phase by helping him set up the tender and contractor appointment. We also helped once onsite overseeing the financial and contractual side of the build.
THE SOLUTION
As our clients were keen to do as much project management as they could themselves, our main role was to provide construction cost planning and management support.
Our client bought chunks of time upfront and he spent it with our Quantity Surveying team as and when he needed it.
Our work with him included advising on the tender packs, the contractual wording, analysing returns and discussing elemenst such as insurance. Once onsite we helped check the invoices and advised our client on how best to tackle and resolve issues such as defects and faulty workmanship.
THE RESULT
As can be seen the transformation was very successful, and we hope to work with our architect client and his own clients again soon!
