Home extensions – top tips for a successful build.

CLPM had a quick chat to Mark, Jill and Jo as part of our research. We were interested in the experience that people have had of undertaking significant building projects. They were three of many who had undertaken this work without using any independent support or advice from a building project manager. If you want a successful build their top tips would be :

Determination

Be prepared to have to manage the process much more than you think you will – it is not possible to get what you want from the build unless you have the time and determination to be really involved with it

Specialists

Go to specialists for items that are costly like bathrooms, kitchens and windows – you may spend a bit more money but you will not be left with random leaks and poor finishing

Seasonality

Remember to think about when you are going to start. Never underestimate how cold it can be if you start building works over the winter months. Or how hot in the height of summer. This might have an effect on the build.

Sourcing

In sourcing items like tiles, work with the builder and use his suppliers to get the discounts that he does. Even if you are using different suppliers, still ask what discounts or deals are available. You will be amazed!

Independent Project Management

Consider independent project management. Getting a proper timeline for the works. Having help with building up a realistic budget and having someone on your side to check over and where necessary. Or to challenge the drawings or building would have been very helpful.
