Actually, this is a very common problem. It is one the team here at CLPM come across a lot of the time. We are often approached by clients who have started a renovation or home improvement project, only to find it has run into trouble. Our team of project managers are well versed in visiting sites and planning how to work through problems to ensure our clients do get their dream home.
Stacey Solomon’s Renovation Rescue

Stacey Solomon’s Renovation Rescue is now airing now on Channel 4.
It is aimed at helping a number of homeowners who have found their renovation projects in trouble. They have been ripped off by cowboy builders, contractors who have gone bust, or used companies who are just not up to scratch. The program, via Stacey helps them to find low-cost solutions, and DIY options to help finish their projects.

How did CLPM help?
Once appointed, we were initially asked to provide a summary of each project. Highlight the issues, and produce a plan of what was required to get the project back on track.
This is ideal for our team as we regularly assess projects with our document review at the very beginning to ensure what is being planned is viable. Our Project Managers are experts on site. They can spot building errors, anomalies and potential pitfalls, so with regular visits they are worth their weight in gold if you are not well versed in the building industry.
Our team made regular site visits to assess progress, quality of work, and assist with ensuring the clients plans were finally achieved.
Why is a contract important?
A building contract plays an important part in helping you control your building costs. This formalises your agreement, the price, and the works necessary. Along with the completion date, and how much and when your builder will invoice you and receive payment from you. It can also protect your finances should things go wrong.
It is quite possible that not using a contract can expose your build project to risk. If you don’t use a standard form of building contract you expose yourself to your contractors’ terms and conditions, or common law to control payment, disputes, and insurance amongst other things.
Our team found that projects that start without a contract can be delivered very late and at much higher costs than initially envisaged. More about contracts.
Previous CLPM success stories!
One of our previous projects tells the story of a client of ours who came to us looking for help. They experienced serious problems with their newly renovated home, and didn’t know where to turn. All was going well until the architect failed to carry out regular site visits. This lack of continuity was the source of relationship issues between the build team. The contractor decided to walk away and sub-contract to a 3rd party. With the architect unavailable no-one else was put in place to take control of the construction works – or check the standards of workmanship. CLPM were able to step in and help. Another example is where a self builder client had worked with a builder who had suffered from cash-flow problems. The project had ground to a halt which was very distressing. Our brief was to help sort out the problems and then get things going again by helping to control the cost of the project, setting up a new build programme and then monitoring the works onsite. One client said at the end of the project. “CLPM offered a great degree of comfort. It was reassuring to know there was someone on our side, keeping track of all the costs“
We have several blogs about avoiding construction disasters, we hope they can be of some help.
