How we helped our property developer client build better and reduce his financial risk
THE PROJECT
Our client worked in property and knew that one day he would want to build his own eco home. So much so that he took a 2 day Passivhaus course to learn as much as he could. He bought a plot of land and undertook more research. He started by visiting the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon where he met our Project Manager Mario. Mario was at the centre in the Ask an Expert Arena. Finally our client booked himself onto a Project Management Course at the NSBRC and this is where he met our Operations Director Charlie Laing. After meeting Charlie our client felt CLPM would be a good fit, and felt comfortable that CLPM would provide the time and knowledge gap that he wanted to fill and instructed CLPM to Project Manage his Self Build in Solihull.
THE CHALLENGE
Our client was at a busy time of life, with a demanding job and a young family. He knew he would be unable to meet the high demands of time that a self build commands, but he still wanted to be in overall control. He wanted to build the eco house he had designed, but knew his skill set and knowledge was not detailed enough for him to successfully project manage the build himself.
The most important aspect was to future proof this modern design to be air tight and energy efficient, aiming for passiv standards.
THE SOLUTION
By engaging us at the beginning of the project, our team were able to have an impact straight away. Our Heat and Energy Consultant Rob Bohm was able to provide valuable advice on the energy performance of the designs.
Our client had researched what might be the best fit build solution for his project and decided to use SIPS. SIPs or “Structural Insulated Panels” are a composite panel of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) with a core of rigid structural insulation. This offers an improved thermal-performance-to-wall thickness ratio. Which ultimately makes them better insulation for minimal thickness.
When carrying out a complex building project it is very important to appoint the right build team and obtain the right materials. Our Quantity Surveying team were able to help with tendering and procurement.
Meet Mario
Mario was then appointed to provide site support, and this allowed our client to keep overall control. He worked through the challenges of the project, finding resolutions along the way.
Mario managed the critical path programme CLPM Programming and this was integral to ensure each piece of the puzzle came together at the right time.
Throughout the construction works our Quantity Surveying team also helped the clients monitor their budget via monthly cost reporting. This provided the security our client wanted – to know that the project would be built and finished within their budget.

A modern energy efficient family home that our clients are delighted with and can enjoy for years to come.
