Construction Method Statement and Management Plan
You’ve received planning permission – as part of that, your local council may require certain conditions to be fulfilled before you start to build. They may ask for Construction Method Statement or Construction Management Plan.
Current legislation requires a risk assessment on all construction projects. HSE.Gov explains that a risk assessment should be “suitable and sufficient” as a legal requirement for the majority of smaller projects. However, for more complex domestic projects and commercial builds further documentation such as a Construction Method Statement or Construction Management Plan can be required. Each planning authority and each project will demand a different set of criteria, and it is essential these are completed before work starts on site.
A Construction Method Statement is a document that details exactly how to carry out work safely. When required, it must look at the hazards identified in the risk assessment and expand on the control measures outlined. It should detail how, when, and why you should implement measures.
Construction Method Statements are particularly important to monitor building work because certain tasks during a build can involve high levels of risk. For example, workers use heavy equipment, work from heights, and are exposed to dangerous materials.
