How we helped our clients create a more comfortable home

As energy consultants for Oxfordshire and across the UK, we work with homeowners, businesses, charities and public organisations to help determine the best way to reduce their energy usage, cut their emissions and running costs and make their buildings more comfortable.
THE PROJECT
Our clients were looking to refurbish and extend their 3 storey period property home when they contacted us for sustainability advice. The building had not been touched for 40 years and so was in need of updating.
THE CHALLENGE
Our client’s brief was to determine the best way to make their Victorian home more energy efficient via adding internal insulation, and to decide on the best way to update their heating system.
THE SOLUTION
Our energy consultant checked the existing surveyors reports and then visited the property to carry out a more detailed inspection and met with our clients.
THE RESULT
Contrary to the estate agents and architects reports we found that the building did have some cavity wall insulation. Much of the property was very poorly insulated however, and so we carried out a full energy audit – calculating the existing U values by area and the air changes etc.
We then modelled the effects of upgrading the windows and the impact of various insulation levels on the annual energy requirements of the building. We also looked at the options for alternative heating sources that our clients were interested in – namely biomass and air source heat pumps. Our recommendations were detailed and included specifying the best levels of insulation to add in the various locations across the home, as well as upgrading the existing gas boiler to a more energy efficient version and adding a PV array for electricity generation.
