How a sustainable approach can also support planning applications

THE PROJECT
CLPM provide sustainable building consultancy services for commercial business owners across the South East. We can also help with estimating and tendering for building works as well as and onsite project management.
CLPM have been working for our client, the owner of a growing hospitality business, Micklefield Hall, in Hertfordshire, for a number of years. Over that time he has restored and converted the many historic buildings that are the backdrop for the many weddings and other functions he hosts.
THE CHALLENGE
Our sustainability team have been helping to advise our client and his architects on how they can ensure they restore with sustainability at the heart of the design – reducing energy consumption first, then enhancing energy efficiency, and finally to install the best equipment for the site’s energy needs using, where appropriate, sustainable energy technologies.
This ethos is important not only for the client, but also to support all the necessary planning applications he has submitted for the works.
THE SOLUTION
One important building on the estate is a medieval tithe barn which has been painstakingly restored for use as a function room. Our proposals included firstly specifying a very high degree of insulation, well beyond building regulations. Next our green expert team went on to focus on designing and specifying a whole site wood-burning heating solution, for all the buildings. This included a site coppice management and tree replanting plan for the next 25 years, as well as fully quantifying the carbon emissions pre and post development. This work helped to illustrate the positive impact of the works to the proposed development to support the Listed Building Consent planning application.
THE RESULT
Our clients achieved planning permission and have completed the works on their estate. The result, as these stunning photographs illustrate, is that the finished project has been a great success!
