Internal insulations – getting the fit-out right
A few small snags can emerge with internal insulations during a refurbishment. It all depends on how accurately the survey was done and then any drawings produced.
We are working on one now where we discovered that drawings show the old walls (254mm solid = 9 inch brick plus plaster) as the same thickness as new extensions (330mm = brick, insulated cavity and block plus dry-line). As we weren’t working on the set of Dr Who and this wasn’t his Tardis, something wasn’t going to fit. In a couple of rooms the fit-out of internal cupboards and other features was tight and so a re-survey was done. We now know exactly where things can go.
The solution is still internal insulations, probably 45mm not the aim of 75mm. In some rooms it still works well – especially bathrooms where the internal insulations will prevent condensation and black mould.
One last matter; the window boards need to specified to the new width, so even if they are in good condition will need to be replaced or an extension piece added (loose-tongues or biscuits and all that!).
