Home Energy Check, London Victorian Terrace
Home Energy Check
Commissioning a full, bespoke home energy check is a vital first step in creating an energy efficient house from a period property.
Our London-based clients were planning to refurbish and extend their Victorian mid-terrace home. They had some basic architectural drawings, but wanted to look at their options before talking to local builders.
Our client’s home was cold, dark and as it was very poorly insulated it was also very expensive to heat. Our clients wished to to reduce their home heating costs and get our independent sustainability expert to suggest the best ways to improve their existing house and construct the new extension. Their aim was to improve their home’s comfort and energy performance.
Working with their plans, we carried out a full home energy check. First, we fully reviewed the architectural designs and quantified the current performance of the existing house. Then we looked at the options to improve the existing, poorly insulated building as well as the best way to construct the extension. This involved detailing the exact construction methods and quantifying the energy savings that could be made. We also calculated the associated heating system requirements.
In order to create an energy efficient house with the existing building structure, we recommended our clients apply external insulation to the outside of the house. We also delailed how they could insulate the loft and cellar spaces. When it then came to ensuring that the extension would be energy efficient, we recommended a particular build specification for the extension – using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). We also suggested the introduction of light-pipes through the loft into the design to give the upper floor landing more light. As the orientation of the roof was highly suitable for generating electricity, we also strongly recommended the installation of a PV array and quantified the cost and payback for our clients.
