We recently carried out an energy audit for a church group in Chorleywood, Hertfordshire. The church own a hall which is used widely by local community groups, and wanted our help to do 2 things:-
- Assess their electricity, water and gas usage and help advise how these could be reduced
- Determine whether a roof-mounted PV array would be an appropriate financial investment
Tony Duffin, CLPM’s energy audit and PV array installation adviser carried out a full review to answer both of these questions.
The building was built in 2011, so was in a good state of repair, and had reasonably efficient gas boilers and levels of insulation. Much of Tony’s work therefore involved analysing the data from energy consumption, and then looking at the economics and feasibility of a solar PV system. His main objective being to reduce the building’s operating costs but also to identify any enhancements to comfort.
We reported back to the church group on where immediate cost savings could be made. This involved making suggestions to the systems in place for the day to day control of the heating system, as well as switching off power to a number of items which were not in use.
We then looked at the suitability of the site for a PV array, and reported back on 2 options of array size which the group could consider. Our report gave actionable information such as the sizes of arrays, expected costs of installation, annual generation figures, government feed in tariffs and financial payback periods. We also introduced them to an organisation which can help with funding for church building and installation projects of this nature.
We are pleased to say that the group are now working with us to go about organising the installation of a PV array and we hope that they will have everything in place to start generating electricity next Spring.
