After what was a mild and wet winter last year, the weather experts are forecasting a colder, drier winter for 2014/5. Certainly the de-icer and scraper have had a bit of use in our area these past few days! But whilst our children might eagerly anticipate dragging out their sledges, this is not great news for us Brits with our leaky housing stock!
Shockingly the UK comes a poor 7th in the European home energy efficiency league tables. Our cute chocolate box cottages and leaky Victorian terraces might be pretty to look at but they’re also pretty costly to heat! The UK also has the highest incidence of energy poverty, despite relatively low prices compared with other countries in Europe.
But when we update our homes, how many of use prioritise our spending on better insulation rather than a new bathroom suite? All too often we’re guilty of quite literally papering over the cracks.
Winter time is a great time to assess how comfortable and energy efficient your home really is and make plans to improve things where and when you can. Sometimes the cost of carrying out improvements can payback very quickly via reduced fuel bills. There are also plenty of government incentives out there too.
