Home Energy Check, London Victorian Terrace
Home Energy Check
Commissioning a full, bespoke home energy check is a vital first step in creating an energy efficient house from a period property.
Our London-based clients were planning to refurbish and extend their 19th century mid-terrace home. They wanted to look at their options to reduce heating costs and look at the best way of constructing their extension, before going out to tender.
Working with their detailed plans, we carried out a full home energy check. We fully reviewed the architectural designs and quantified the current performance of the existing house. We then looked at options to improve on the existing, poorly insulated building as well as the best way to construct the extension. We detailed the exact construction methods and quantified the energy savings that could be made. We calculated the associated heating system requirements. In order to create an energy efficient house with the existing building structure, we recommended external insulation to the outside of the house, plus loft and cellar insulation. When it then came to ensuring that the extension would be energy efficient, we recommended a particular build specification for the extension using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). We also suggested the introduction of light-pipes through the loft into the design to give the upper floor landing more light, where it was relatively dark.
The orientation of the roof was highly suitable for generating electricity, so we also strongly recommended the installation of a PV array and quantified the cost and payback for our clients.
